I Need Your Help!

Ok friendly and savvy readers, I need some advice. I live in a small house that was divided to make two apartments. One of my living room walls is shared by my neighbor in her bedroom. I am really tired of her coming over in her bathrobe at 9:30 at night and yelling at me through my window to be quiet because I'm playing a board game with three friends or watching a movie. It is giving me nightmares. Seriously, I had one last night. I googled soundproofing today and I obviously can't take apart the wall to add these crazy layers to it. Does anyone have any tips on attractively (no egg crates or old mattresses please!) soundproofing a wall? We are not noisy tenants at all. We don't throw wild parties and we're usually in bed by 10:30 PM (don't laugh). We just want to play Cranium once and awhile and watch Saturday Night Live on the weekends. Thank you kind and super-stylish blog readers!

  1. You can put one of those wide IKEA bookcases against the shared wall, stuff it with books, records, magazines, etc. and that acts as another layer of insulation.

  2. That solves our record collection problem at the same time (10 crates of records taking up the living room floor)! What a great idea! Thank you!

  3. That is a tough situation. It is almost worse than a bad roommate (you can always kick the not-so-nice-roomie out, but not so with the neighbors!) The bookshelf sounds like a great idea. Good luck with it!

  4. Lead walls? hmm...interesting idea. I'm not sure the property manager would be too kean on that alteration. Maybe I can turn it into a crazy Richard Serra installation or something!
